HISTORY AND FICTION ENTWINE as three different eras are woven into this novel. Egypt of the 17th and 18th Dynasties; the 18th century Egyptologist, August Mariette (who actually wrote the story on which Verdi's Aida is based), and his younger brother Jude, a continent away in Canada's northland; and the 20th century Eleanor Lambert, grand-daughter of the elder Mariette. The author moves back and forth between what is 'known' and what he imagines, and the multiple points of view reflect the diversity, multiplicity and tolerance of both the ancient Egyptian and contemporary Ojibway cultures.
