On the Road Again ... Again

Andrew Little

6 X 9 inches, 208 pages
over 50 b&w photographs

SELDOM WITHOUT HIS CAMERA since joining the On the Road Again team in 1988, Andrew Little loved to capture "ordinary Canadians doing extraordinary things." On the Road Again ... Again features Andrew Little's portraits of the remarkable Canadians he met while field producer for the TV show during its first five formative years. The book contains photos from all ten provinces, the Territories and the Yukon.

Little explains portraiture in general: "It is a subtle dance between the photographer and subject, with the photographer leading." But for the photos in On the Road Again ... Again the process was reversed. "It was the subjects who were leading, I simply asked them if I could take their picture. Invariably they assumed a pose that was their own, relaxed, yet evocative of who they were. All I had to do was make sure they were in focus and properly framed and that the film was correctly exposed."

Little gives people the opportunity who have never seen the show to meet its characters—the show's extended family. "I wanted to give permanency to the people who were the lifeblood of the show." He reflects, "The mini-documentaries had to be edited to time. Not so in the book. Some things, left out because they didn't quite fit the television concept, found a new home in my writing. And I was able to rearrange the profiles as a collection of written stories."

"If you liked CBC's popular series, you'll like the book. Andrew Little captures much of the spirit of the original in good prose—and as a bonus for the curious—he updates the stories recounted in the book. The photographs are excellent. Unselfconscious and down-home Canadiana at its best!"

—Tom Henighan, author of Maclean's Companion to Canadian Arts and Culture

"Andrew Little's special gift is to get people to share what is special about them. Through these photographs he's been able to "picture" memorable characters—we can return again and again to the book and draw inspiration from their stories. A true celebration of the remarkable lives and values of so-called ordinary Canadians."
—Lionel Lumb, Carleton University School of Journalism

"People make the country and Andrew Little's photos of colourful, sometimes eccentric Canadians provide a unique look at Canada from sea to sea to sea."
—Jason Moscovitz, Senior Parliamentary Correspondent, CBC TV News
