This Mortal Coil

Jill Solnicki

6 X 9 inches, 80 pages

Penumbra Press Poetry Series, No. 25

'JILL SOLNICKI'S FIRST BOOK IS STARTLING in its strength, honesty, and wit. Her observation of people and her understanding of human frailites and relationships is shrewd, and she can be both deeply moving and wry about sexual and family relationships. Her poems of Greece are more than travel snaps; they are real explorations of the mythic roots of our culture, at once unpretentious and revelatory. This is an impressive book, lucid, disciplined, and profoundly humane.'

—Robin Skelton

Zeus came here,
to these warm springs,
led his lovers to the grotto,
far from Hera's angry gaze:

let us slip through this crevice,
the door in grey stone,
follow Zeus' route, around the corner
(where Semele snagged her stocking,
Leda lost a shoe),

hand in hand down the dark,
fingers finding the stone wall,
the cobweb curtain,
the beetle maid who turns back the blanket
on the hot, bubbling bed.
